P.I.E. ....
Many teachers forget to make their lesson a piece of P.I.E., and thats a tasteless
mistake!
An effective, fun and nourishing lesson consists of three pieces
known as P.I.E.
The first piece is Persuade. To be an effective teacher and to make the lesson
meaningful, you must persuade your students of the importance
of the lesson and how the information meets their needs.
The second piece is Inform. This piece is the substance of the lesson, the
real meat. In other words, it is the information to be learned
and applied.
The third crucial piece is Entertain. Make the lesson come alive with a little entertainment.
When a lesson contains these three pieces of the P.I.E., the lesson is one thats
learned.
Read and heed
the "How
to"
for the recipe for your own daily... piece of the P.I.E.!

The first piece, Persuade, must be given immediately
after the title of the lesson. The best way to persuade your
students of the importance and applicability... (say that
three times...) of a lesson is to tell a story. Yes, start with a story that sells
the sizzle of your lesson.
Remember...
students
learn because of the sizzle... not the steak! Think about that
one a minute. If you have trouble internalizing this statement...
contact me. I'd love to explain!
The best way on earth to sell the benefits of a lesson is to tell a story that relates to the lesson subject.
"Sell the sizzle... not the steak!"
The second piece is Inform. The secret to make your lesson informative and
informational is to make it specific and sequential. Tell students
what you expect... remember
the Road Map...
in specific and measurable terms, and then give a concise road
map of where to go and how to get there.
Tell what
to learn and how to learn it.
The final piece that holds the other two pieces of the lesson
together is Entertain. I can hear the moans
and groans from here!!!
ENTERTAIN?
No Way!!!!
I'm a teacher not an entertainer. Yap! you're right! And a good
teacher is a good entertainer.
Why? Because, when students
enjoy the process of learning, naturally learning becomes an
easy process. Too serious is dangerous!... It creates the #1
inhibitor of learning... FEAR!
So... lighten up and make your lesson a joy... entertain a little.
Make your lesson come alive with humorous examples, jokes, and
any other means to make the learning experience fun and enjoyable.
LEARNING is a piece of P.I.E. when you use the right
ingredients...
PERSUADE
INFORM
ENTERTAIN
Create a little
piece of heaven... with P.I.E....
