#17 Not Respecting                             Students...

Disrespect has reached epidemic proportion in many schools today, and that hurts... everyone!

To resolve this crippling situation, the teacher
must be the first to restore respect and trust in the classroom.

Sure... I know it's beyond hard to show respect and restraint when dealing with a next-to-nasty student. You'd like to rare back and punch his lights out... But look who's looking! That's right!...

Look who's looking... other students!
As a role model
cool is your tool. Calm and cool are your best weapons to fight disrespect and build trust in the classroom.

How do you get calm and cool at the point of attack... when the student is yelling... screaming... even cursing you?

Great question! Read the
How to for your recipe for calm... cool and respect!

To maintain your calm and cool at the point of attack, keep this one thought in mind...

"I know this student must be hurting inside to show so much anger... pain and frustration! I refuse to add to his feelings of helplessness and hopelessness."

Perception is everything! You have the POWER to instantly change your perception of the student and the situation by... etching the above statement in your mind until it becomes an automatic response. It must be automatic... confrontational situations crop up without warning! You must be prepared... You must respond with calm and cool... automatically!

It's cool to be calm!
Students will see that in you and respect you for it!

To diffuse potentially confrontational situations before they occur, try this...

Discuss with each class the importance of mutual respect in school and in life. Tell them you intend to increase the respect level in your classroom to new heights. They are "somebody" in your classroom. They'll know it by the respect they receive and show.

Ask for their input. Have them relate situations where they felt disrespected. Focus on solutions and
not on blame. Look for and find ways to develop respect and kindness in the classroom.

"Please" and "Thank You" work wonders!

Have the class list ways to increase the level of respect in the entire school. Increase your level of awareness in regard to how you treat your students.

Many of the disrespectful messages sent are not by the words used, but by non-verbal communications.
Watch what your body is saying...especially your face!

Invite your students to tell you when they
feel disrespected. Develop a key word to warn you and others when disrespect is detected. I like... Ouch!

Remember... we can’t expect our students to treat us better than we threat them.

Stay... calm and cool. You'll be respected for it! You'll feel better about it in the morning!

Smiles,
Karl
