#13 No Road Map...

Can you imagine going on a trip, to a place you've never been before, without a road map?
Scary thought isn't it?... Most of the time you get lost... or at least I do!

We, as teachers, scare the pants off our students every day... when we don't tell them UP FRONT where they're headed when we teach a lesson. We aren't mean... We aren't nasty... it just happens.

Because students don't know where they're going, they invest tons of time and effort trying to out guess us. Usually they fail! That's a big mistake!

When students don't know where they're going and why... trouble is on the horizon.

Many teachers expect their students to take a risky journey through their class without a concise, instructional road map, and that’s a mistake.

Think back over the years invested in various classes. How many times did you know where the lesson or class was headed?
Better yet, how many times did the teacher know the end result or the instructional destination?

I bet your answer is like mine—
not many.

Not knowing where to go or what is expected leads to eventual confusion and failure for you and your students.

When you don’t know where you’re going, you may end up somewhere else and not even know it. Think about it!

To help point your students in the right direction, give them a readable and down-to-earth
Road Map at the beginning of each lesson.

Tell them
UP FRONT.. in terms they can understand.... Where they're going?... and Why?

First answer these BlockBuster questions:

What are the measurable outcomes of this lesson? That's a fancy way of asking... What on earth are your student going to be able to
DO and KNOW at the end of the lesson?

That's the content of the learning ROAD MAP... the DO and KNOW?

Then, what is the step-by-step sequence to learn the Do and the Know? That's the Recipe! The ingredients... The HOW!

It's really pretty simple to help students learn...

1. Give the Road Map... what?
2. Give the Reason... the why?
3. Give the Recipe... the how?
4. Give the Result... the final DO... the product... the outcome... the you know! The reason the lesson existed in the first place.

Well, it's late at night and I think I'm rambling off the road a bit... Forgive! Forgive?

But... it all must start with the
ROAD MAP!

Answering these questions is not easy and requires thought.

When you answer these questions, it gives you and your students an enormous sense of
direction and control. When students know the end destination of a lesson, everyone pulls together to reach the end result as quickly and efficiently as possible.

It’s amazing how much easier it is for you to teach a lesson when you know where you're going and how to get there.
So simple! So true!

The key is to know where you’re going and how to get there. Up front, at the beginning, give each student a
Road Map to follow. This will help insure success in your lesson and your class.

Give your students what most of your teachers never invested enough time or effort to give you—a
Road Map to success.

The best to the best,
Karl
