32 Mistakes...

      #1 B
eing Boring

The quality of your instruction is determined by the quality of your communications with your students.

The #1 communication mistake of teachers is to Be Boring and not even know it. Not knowing you’re boring is scary and detrimental to both you and your students.

For your own information, look at your students. Notice their posture, the look in their eyes, and the level of excitement and participation in the classroom. If you see your students falling into the drone zone, watch out. You may have fallen into the trap of being badly boring.

The big question is how to get out of the trap so your students and you can enjoy the process of learning and growing.

The way to put spark, excitement and enthusiasm back into you and your classroom is to simply change any aspect of your delivery.

For example, get out from behind your desk or podium and move. That’s right, do the two step. Take two steps forward and then two steps back; take two steps to the left and then two steps to the right. Be adventuresome; walk down the row to the back of the class and lead your class discussion from the back of the room.

Another way to beat boring is to change the expression on your face. Try it and see how your students respond. A simple change in your facial expression creates a whole new dynamic in the class. As a reminder of what your face is saying, keep a mirror handy and take a peak to see what your students see. Look at what your face in saying to your students. Take special notice of your eyes. Are they smiling? Are you bubbling or boring?

Another nifty change to incorporate in your anti-boring campaign is to change different aspects of your voice. For example, change your delivery rate. If you naturally talk slow, force yourself to noticeably speed up. Vary the pace. Make your voice changes pleasant and pleasing. Add a well placed and timed pause in your delivery. Make it five seconds. Then watch the heads turn. The power of the pause is penetrating because it shatters boring. Add volume to your voice. Your voice volume is always lower than you think, so turn up the volume.

The opposite to boring is to be bouncy with genuine excitement and passion for your subject. Boring is bad.

Force yourself to apply at least one of these HOW TO’s to your teaching repertoire. You’ll love it, and so will your students.

Change is good even if it feels uncomfortable at first.

Please remember...
